School Visits

ENGAGING SCHOOL VISITS

Teacher and Writer

Hola, Teachers, and Librarians, thanks for checking my website.

I have over 20 years of experience as a Kindergarten and Spanish teacher. Now, I teach Elementary Spanish online (K-5th). Therefore, I have lots of experience keeping students engaged online. My teaching style is very playful and interactive. Feel free to check a few video lessons I prepared for my students on my Youtube channel. I also work with Nearpod, Padlet, Gimkit, Kahoot, Blooket, and many others. Let me know your favorite and we can set it up.

I would love to visit your school to read my books and talk about the writing process. I have different topics listed below, but feel free to email me your ideas.

All sessions include reading a book in a very interactive way and answering questions.

You can choose one or more of my books for the presentation.

Presentation Ideas

Here are some ideas, but I am always open to more. Also, check my teacher’s guide (Abuela’s Super Capa is almost done) HERE.

How do writers get inspired?

Let’s get inspired too. (Kinder-5th) – After talking about me and my books and how I get inspired, we will let the kids get inspired and talk or draw ideas for their next books/stories.

Show, don’t tell.

Kids will review sentences with me and how to make them stronger by showing and not telling. Then I will give them a chance to try writing and revising their own sentences. (2nd to 5th)

Growth Mindset.

I will read my book BELLA’S RECIPE FOR SUCCESS and talk about my growth mindset as a writer, who had dyslexia and discuss with students about making mistakes and trying again. (any age)

Similes

In my book BELLA’S RECIPE FOR SUCCESS, Bella compares her frosting to cocodrilo skin and her somersaults as jirafas rolling downhill. So, after reading the book and talking about similes, I ask students to create their own funny similes.

Meet the Author.

I will talk about what it takes to be an author: my books, the writing process, how to get an agent, and the submission process. (3rd to 5th)

Revising, revising, revising.

I will show examples of my previous versions to discuss about revisions. A. the Big Picture: Plot, Structure, Character  B. Line edits, and word choice.   (2nd-5th)

Bilingual – Spanish/English – Culture

Both books below were written in English and Spanish.

I will read both versions of the one you choose and talk about how proud one should be for being bilingual. Students can also talk about their culture and something special their families do. It can be a cultural tradition or a family tradition.

What connects us as humans.

We will talk about universal feelings and what connects us as humans.

Perspective

After reading IF YOUR BABYSITTER IS A BRUJA (also available in Spanish), we can talk about how we would feel if we were the babysitter or if you were the girl. What would you do if you were one of them? Normally, while presenting this book, we also have a cackle contest.

Social Emotional Learning

After reading ABUELA’S SUPER CAPA (also in Spanish), we can talk about how the main character dealt with his grandma being sick. Then we can talk about different emotions and how each one deals with their emotions.
