Creating Musicality in Storytelling

When writing a story, especially if you want to write a read-aloud, think about sounds and rhythms. How can you add a beat? How can you add musicality? How can you make your story more fun to read?

I used three mentor picture books to talk about that.

  1. City Feet – by Aixa Pérez-Prado – this story has a beat. You can feel it. It’s so fun.

2. Mi Ciudad Canta – by Cynthia Harmony and Teresa Martines

The city sings, and the book does too. With alliteration and repetition, we can hear the city song.

3. If Your Abuelo is an Astronauta by Ana Siqueira and Irena Freitas – short sentences, repetitions, snappy sentences.

Tips –

  1. When I want my story to sound more rhythmic, I read poems right before writing.
  2. Then, I write using 2nd person – when you use the second person, it is like the story has to have the beat. Imagine reading “If Your Mouse Wants a Cookie,” without a beat. Not possible.
